UC Irvine Laboratory Replacement Building, Irvine, CA
Owen is providing structural engineering services for the new Design-Build Clinical Laboratory replacement Building, situated along a central East – West axis from The City Center Drive on the east side of campus next to the 5 freeway. The building will be highly visible from the 5 freeway traveling in both North and South directions and also along Chapman Avenue traveling west. Temporarily the new Clinical Replacement Laboratory will also play a strong presence when entering the campus from City Center Dr. In the finished master plan the new Laboratory will be on the east side of a future medical office building.
The CLRB is a five-story poured-in-place concrete building to house the Medical Center’s Laboratory Facilities. The proposed structural system is based on the preliminary architectural layouts.
The proposed poured-in-place concrete structure will be comprised of 8” fl at slab concrete fl oors and 20” square concrete columns providing the bulk of the gravity load resisting system. The on grade fl oor will consist of a 5” concrete slab supported on compacted fill. The building’s rectangular fl oor plan and evenly spaced punched windows allows for a nearly complete perimeter moment frame system providing the lateral load resisting system. The beam/column system of frames will be designed and detailed in accordance with the California Building Code 2007 Edition requirements for SMRF’s. |
